Bristol City of Film cinemagoers invited to FREE UK preview of award-winning German film ‘System Crasher’ on 3rd December as part of European Cinema Night

Cinemagoers in Bristol City of Film are in for a rare Winter treat on 3rd December; a completely FREE UK preview of German arthouse hit ‘System Crasher’ at Watershed, followed by a Q&A with the film’s producer Frauke Kolbmüller and a FREE drinks reception, as part of ‘European Cinema Night’.

Watershed is one of only two UK cinemas taking part in ‘European Cinema Night’, an annual cross-continent event organised by Creative Europe MEDIA Programme taking place between 2-6 December. Now in its second year, this unique outreach event will celebrate the richness of European film culture by screening MEDIA-supported films in 54 cities, reaching more than 14,500 people. This special screening of MEDIA-supported title ‘System Crasher’ is presented in partnership with its UK distributor, South West-based 606 Distribution and Bristol UNESCO City of Film.

Mark Cosgrove, Cinema Curator, Watershed says: “Since opening in Germany in September, System Crasher has become one of the most successful local arthouse releases of the year. It’s success in Germany mirrors the UK success of Bait so it’s a real treat to be able to preview it in Bristol this month with its producer Frauke Kolbmüller in person to take questions from the audience. We will have the film back at Watershed early next year when it is on general release.”

Bristol UNESCO City of Film Coordinator Natalie Moore says: “We’re delighted to welcome European Cinema Night to Bristol City of Film. Our selection as the only UK location outside London taking part is testament to Watershed’s continued hard work in bringing the best in European cinema to Bristol’s audiences. It will be fantastic to connect Frauke Kolbmüller, producer of one of Germany’s biggest indie hits of 2019, with Bristol filmmakers including Kate Byers and Linn Waite, producers of Bait, one of the UK’s most successful indie films of the year.”

The debut feature from German director Nora Fingscheidt, ‘System Crasher’ is a powerful drama about a troubled nine year-old girl caught in an overstretched social welfare system. Driven by a powerhouse performance from Helena Zengel as the young Benni, the film was a highlight of the Berlin International Film Festival in February this year, winning the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer prize which recognises films that "opens new perspectives on cinematic art".
