Bunja Conteh AfroWelsh Connection at Cotham Club
About
Bunja Conteh is returning to Cotham Club for a gig that celebrates both the launch of his Tamala album and Cotham Club's second birthday. The action starts at 7.30pm in Cotham Club's iconic venue at the top of St Michael's Hill, Bristol and tickets are available via headfirst: https://hdfst.uk/e100630
Recently heard on the BBC, Bunja Conteh leads the AfroWelsh Connection which fuses the profoundly beautiful ancient Gambian kora with contemporary Welsh-influenced folk.
Gary Prestwich of Cotham Club explains: "Whilst the Gambia and South Wales share few obvious similarities, Bunja and Liz Conteh, husband and wife, have found an enchanted middle ground between their birthplaces and traditions. Born into a famous griot family in Brikama Town, Bunja is a skilled player of the 21-stringed African harp kora, in the tradition of Mandinka griots - the musicians/ storytellers/ oral historians/ mediators/ entertainers and praise singers whose craft is passed down from generation to generation. His grandfather, Alhajie Bai Konteh, was the first to travel and introduce the kora to American audiences in the 1970s. Liz Conteh, herself a fine exponent of the African djembe drum, here brings dynamic and melodic guitar accompaniment to the live performance, with Chandra Moon on flute, Terry Payne on mandolin, and Lucy Marley on backing vocals and percussion."
Alice Chapman, Chair of Cotham Club said: "Bunja Conteh and the AfroWelsh Connection delighted the audience at our second gig in May 2022 and we are so looking forward to welcoming them back to celebrate their album launch and our second birthday! Cotham Club is pioneering a new type of gig: all age, all Bristol, always good value, always great global sounds. Our relaxed vibe makes it a great place to come on your own, or with friends and family."
