Treasure Island Trail with Pirate standing near a barrel

Birthplace of pirates

Infamous pirate Blackbeard once walked the streets of Bristol and hid his treasure in a cave under St Mary Redcliffe Church. His birthplace and childhood home still stands on the Harbourside and there are regular pirate walks around the area to learn more about Bristol’s legendary past including the Treasure Island Trail

Up, up and away

Bristol is the world’s largest producer of hot air balloons and there has been an annual festival every year since 1979 to celebrate. Marvel as up to 150 balloons ascend into the sky from Ashton Court Estate for the spectacle of the year every August. You can book at hot-air balloon flight almost year-round from Bailey Balloons, Elite Air (UK) or Bristol Balloons, but the best season is roughly April-October.

Street art stardom

World-famous anonymous artist Banksy hails from Bristol and his work can be found all over the city. Banksy and other incredible Bristol artists led to the city embracing street art and it now hosts one of the largest graffiti festival in the world every July, Upfest. A street art walking tour is not to me missed on any visit to Bristol; great fun for any age. Not only is Bristol a recognised featured location in its own right, but it’s also a hot bed of production for many TV programmes and films. As a result, it was awarded UNESCO City of Film status in 2017. Bristol is home to Aardman Animations and BBC Bristol, who produce 25% of all the world’s nature documentaries including ones featuring icon Sir David Attenborough. Where chocolate bars began

Bristol is home to some pretty cool inventions from Ribena to Concorde, but did you know that the chocolate bar was also invented in the city? Fry’s Chocolate was once situated in the centre of Bristol and produced these sweet treats alongside another Bristol invention – the Easter egg! Find out what else is made in Bristol.
