Find out what Laura from the Visit Bristol team thought of The Book of Mormon, which is lighting up the Bristol Hippodrome until 8 November 2025.
If you’re looking for a night out in Bristol that’s outrageous, hilarious and full of heart, look no further than The Book of Mormon! The musical comedy from the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Bobby Lopez, the Co-writer of Avenue Q and Frozen has taken the world by storm and now it’s bringing its unique brand of humour and high energy to Bristol.

A show like no other
The moment the curtain lifted and the opening number “Hello!” began, I knew we were in for something special. The show’s trademark mix of bold satire, catchy tunes and razor-sharp wit had the whole audience laughing within seconds.
The story follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent from Utah to Uganda, where their earnest attempts to share their faith lead to a series of unashamedly controversial encounters. It’s cheeky, clever and brilliantly written, poking fun at religion, culture and human optimism in equal measure.
Standout performances
The cast were all phenomenal, Daniel George-Wright as that evening's Elder Price, the straight-laced overachiever, and Sam Glen as Elder Cunningham, his awkward but lovable companion, are a comedic duo you can’t help but root for. Their chemistry is infectious, and the ensemble cast’s dance numbers are slick, colourful and bursting with energy.
Musically, the show is more than just jokes: the songs are catchy, cleverly constructed and stick in your mind. Every song lands perfectly, from the gloriously over-the-top “Turn It Off” to the tongue-in-cheek “Hasa Diga Eebowai”. You’ll find yourself humming the tunes long after the final curtain call.

Laughs, shocks and a little heart
Be warned: this is not a gentle, conventional musical. It’s satirical, edgy and sometimes provocative. It takes aim at organised religion, cultural assumptions and missionary idealism and it doesn’t pull punches, what else would you expect from the creators of South Park though?! The humour is bold, brash and often very rude. But beneath the outrageous jokes lies a surprisingly warm message about belief, connection and finding hope in unexpected places. By the end of the night, I was laughing but also strangely uplifted.
It promises a feel-good evening of theatre that will have you laughing, gasping and clapping along. The Book of Mormon is an absolute must-see in Bristol this autumn.
