Find out what Laura from the Visit Bristol team thought of The National Theatre's acclaimed production of War Horse, which is at Bristol Hippodrome until 21 June.
War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical experience which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness.

This production is directed by Tom Morris with revival director Katie Henry and wow, what a show! It was honestly one of the most intense and moving theatrical experiences I have had. From the first note of song, through the years of Joey as a foal, the outbreak of the First World War and all the horrors of that period, to touching and sweet moments, this show really takes you on a journey with the characters involved.
At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. You forget that you are watching puppets, and the personalities of the horses and other animals sweep you away and into the story.
This is already a mesmerising story, but I wasn’t expecting to be quite so emotionally invested in Joey the horse and his life and fate. I had tears in my eyes on a few occasions.

The staging is simple yet powerful. The songs punctuate the drama and the warmth and lighter moments shine through the darkness of some of the themes covered.
An intensely moving evening of entertainment, a well-deserved standing ovation and whether you are new to the story or have read the novel or seen the film, I just urge you to see this Bristol production for yourself to experience it while you can.
Tickets are still available for most shows, although limited.
