About
The Canteen is one of Bristol’s most celebrated, independent and iconic spaces. In the heart of Stokes Croft, it works as a space to meet, eat, drink and play. With a magical quality of heart and soul that is almost unquantifiable.
An ethical, sustainable operation with all decisions made underpinned by three core values People, Profit and Planet.
A proud member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association the Canteen aims to deliver ethics and sustainability across the business from the treatment of staff, use of renewable energy, responsible waste management, sourcing locally where possible, ensuring all menus change with the seasons and to be a pillar of the local community. Certified as "On The Road" to Net Zero, reducing all carbon emissions output over the next five years.
With a big open “canteen” style space, and a luscious sun terrace, equipped with a weather proof awning, there is always space for one more - doing their best to accommodate everyone.
Live music is at the heart of The Canteen. Live bands play six nights a week and entry is free every day, with a small charge on Friday & Saturday nights after 9:30pm. The music promoter curates an eclectic mix of bands ensuring the program stays fresh and relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds including folk, afrobeat rock and club nights.
The bookings reflect the wider rhythm of the week with calmer early week increasing in tempo and volume to the weekend. Sunday bands are a laid-back affair, something to ease the end of your week, and from 7pm the resident house DJs pick up the pace with the Sunday Sessions night. Spinning strictly vinyl, these nights offer fellow hospitality folk a discount off selected booze.
100% vegetarian/vegan menu designed with the seasons in mind. Offering affordable nutritious and responsibly sourced food. Working closely with local suppliers, having regular changing dishes on the menus that fit with their rhythm. Meaning mouth-wateringly fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Grab a quick bite, or sit down with a glass of wine at lunchtimes, the menu will always have options for all-sized appetites. The evening small plates menu allow guests to try a variety of flavours, and works with any budget. Recommending 2-3 per person, with 80% of the dishes being vegan.
Beers, ciders, ales - we are really proud of Bristol brewed offering, including our great partnership with Wiper & True brewing our own exclusive lager, Homegrown. With frequently changing draught and a good selection of cans and bottles, booze is the blood flowing through the venue.
Good quality organic coffee from Extract Coffee Roasters, served by trained baristas and available with semi-skimmed cow or oat milk. Extract also supply the wide range of fruit and herb teas and creamy hot chocolate.
The wine list is exclusively European and celebrates UK producers alongside fossil-free imports from Portugal that arrive by sailboat.
The newly introduced cocktail list is exclusively sourced from Bristol distillers and brewers, making it fresh, local and great for the planet.
