Clifton’s elegant old lady has re-emerged as a bright young thing following a major refurbishment under the Hotel du Vin brand. Decorated in deep, dark colours, with an original fireplace and awe-inspiring views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the glamorous Laurent Perrier suite (pictured below) has his and hers bath tubs.

One of these nights: Beech House Serviced Apartments

A cut above the usual serviced apartments, this is self-catering with a dash of boutique hotel. A marriage of period features and playful contemporary design, all the studios and home-from-home apartments come with Hypnos beds, rain showers in high-spec bathrooms and a great location between Clifton Village and the Harbourside. We love Apartment 4 (pictured below) with its loungey living space and pretty pink-and-scarlet fabrics.

Cuddle up: Rockets on the Roof – Brooks Guest House

On the rooftop of Brooks Guest House, a small collection of metal-clad ‘Rockets’ – similar to the classic American Airstream caravan – sit in an Astroturf garden, four storeys above St Nick’s Market. Each gleaming Rocket-on the-Roof (pictured below) has a double bed, a micro bathroom, disco-colour LED mood lights and views of the spires and rooftops of Bristol’s Old City.

Number Thirty Eight Clifton

The Times reckons it’s one of the coolest places to stay in the UK – and it’s recently expanded, adding two swish new suites in the house next door. All the rooms are fabulous (and all have views of the city or the urban meadows of the Downs) but the dual-aspect East and West Loft Suites are head-over-heels gorgeous with super-king beds, indulgent roll-top tubs, soft velvety furniture and painted panelling.

Sexy in the city: Paintworks Apartments

The hip place to hang out, is Paintwork’s ‘Creative Quarter’ – a mile or so from the centre of Bristol – where five New York-style lofts offer designer apartments with a cool industrial vibe. The stylish one-bedroom River Loft has hand-painted Japanese murals, a balcony with urban river views and, shhh, a secret roof garden.

Room with a view: The Bristol

Part of the Doyle Collection, The Bristol is the city’s only waterfront hotel. Boutique-style rooms overlook the bustling Floating Harbour with its boats, bridges and lively nightlife. Dine in the hotel’s River Grille, hop on board a Bristol Ferry Boat, or take a romantic walk along the wharfs to Brunel’s SS Great Britain.

Anatolian romance: Berwick Lodge

Named after ancient Anatolian civilisations, the rooms at Berwick Lodge - on the northern edge of Bristol - combine the grandeur of an Ottoman palace with the elegance of an English country house. Lydia has a vast half-tester bed, a huge tiled bathroom (pictured below) and large bay window overlooking the gardens with a glimpse of the Severn Estuary through a bower of trees.

Bubbly and twin baths: Hotel du Vin Bristol

In this converted 18th century sugar warehouse, every room is named after a classic wine or a vineyard – the ultimate being the glamorous Verve Clicquot room. With a king-size bed, velvety, earthy décor, a comfy lounge and a pair of side-by-side roll-top tubs in an indulgent bathroom, the split-level city suite has got love written all over it.

A grand affair: De Vere Tortworth Estate

Grade II* listed and set in rolling Gloucestershire countryside, this magnificent pile has been the family seat of the Ducie family since 1631. Now it’s had a 21st century make-over – freshening up old rooms with a new take on a traditional British look (tweeds, leather and linens) and adding eleven new bedrooms and suites. In the giant Kipling Suite (pictured above left) you get in-room dining, a large lounge area, fluffy robes, slippers, luxury toiletries and enough room to swing a lion.

Country lovers: Backwell House

In an elegant Georgian mansion, set in rural Somerset only 15 minutes from the city, Backwell House is a B&B with knobs on. One of nine gold-star rooms, Hobbs (pictured below) features a dreamy bateau bed, a copper slipper bath and country views. Relax downstairs in a clubby leather sofa by a cosy woodburner or intimate dinner in the award-winning restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes less than a year after opening.

Royal splendour: Thornbury Castle

Things didn’t turn out too well for the young Tudor Queen, but this magnificent 16th century castle once played the love-nest for Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn - and the place oozes history (think oak panelling, roaring fires, and a dungeon dining room). Choose from 28 splendid bedchambers all with truly king-size beds: the 10-footer in the Tower Room is said to be the widest in Britain.

Tee for Two: Tracy Park

The luxury Four Poster rooms at Tracy Park are housed in ‘Carriages’ - a newly converted 19th century stable block - and feature muslin-draped king size beds, snazzy modern bathrooms and views of the estate. Tracy Park is an enchanting 16th century manor house set in Somerset parkland and its own 18-hole championship golf courses (there are two), between Bristol and Bath Spa. The stables, incidentally, are said to have inspired Anna Sewell’s horsey novel Black Beauty.
